FUN FACT!

SALARY.
WHAT SALARY?!?!

- Team members are paid $1.00/year. After taxes this leaves us with about 67 cents. The dollar used to be a formality so that Team members would fall under the County's insurance plan. In 1979 legislation changed that requirement and we now get paid the $1/year out of tradition.

About Us

The Malibu Search & Rescue Team is an all volunteer organization comprised of Reserve Deputy Sheriff's and a select few Civillian Volunteers. There is no charge for being rescued! Members on the Team volunteer their time and effort because they enjoy helping others and love participating in the search and rescue of lost or injured persons. The Team is affiliated with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and is a member of the Mountain Rescue Association.

TIME COMMITMENT - Team members volunteer anywhere from 20 to 100 or more hours per month. The average is about 40 hours per month. We also spend several hundred dollars of our own money each year to support our activities with the team. All this to provide a FREE service to the communities we serve. We do it because we love the work.

JURISDICTION - 187 square miles of the Santa Monica Mountains from the Los Angeles/Ventura County line to Pacific Palisades, the east face of the Santa Susana Mountains and the contract cities of Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, Malibu, Calabasas and Hidden Hills. We can also be sent anywhere in Los Angeles County to assist other LASD teams. We also respond anywhere in the state or country if requested to do so through the California Office of Emergency Services (OES).

MSAR INC. - The Team is incorporated as a non-profit 501(c)(3) public benefit corporation so we may accept charitable Donations in support of the team. We are partially funded by Los Angeles County, but it does not cover all the operating costs of the team.

EQUIPMENT - The team is fully equipped for all types of searches and technical rescues including vehicle-over-the-side, snow and ice, steep angle, downed aircraft, climbing, etc.. We have one main Rescue Truck with a PTO Winch and 1100' of cable, a backup rescue truck, one Rescue Geo Tracker 4x4, a 4x4 Mitsubishi Montero, a 4x4 FORD F350 and a Mobile Command Post. We also work with Air Crews from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Sheriff's Department on many of our operations.
